Olympic Fever: A Spotlight on Egypt - Medany Headlines Egypt's Medal Hopefuls

* Egypt's main gold medal hopeful is Aya Medany, who will be competing in the modern pentathlon competition. The incredible Medany clinched championship titles in the 2007 Pentathlon World Cup, the 2007 World Championships, and in the recent Junior World Championships in Cairo. Medany will be facing tough competition from the world number one, Amelie Caze of France, and from Olympics gold medal holder, Zsuzsanna Voros, of Hungary. The pentathlon includes 5 events; swimming, running, shooting, fencing and horse riding.

* Egyptian gymnast, Sherine El Zeiny, is the only African women competitor in the Beijing Olympics artistic gymnastics event. The 17-year-old, who had an incredible performance at the 2007 World Championships in Stuttgart, received a wildcard to the Beijing Olympics. "Being the only one from Africa is very exciting. It motivates me as I would like to make people from Egypt and Africa proud," said El Zeiny.

* Egypt's handball team have been drawn in group B at the men's handball competition alongside Germany, Denmark, Russia, Republic of Korea and Iceland. Group A consists of: Poland, France, Croatia, China, Spain and Brazil.

* Egypt's volleyball team have been drawn in group B at the men's volleyball competition with Serbia, Brazil, Poland, Germany, and Russia. Group A features the USA, Italy, Bulgaria, China, Japan and Venezuela.

* Other contestants will represent Egypt in the following sports: synchronized swimming, shooting, badminton, boxing, rowing, fencing and archery events. Egypt has 118 athletes competing in 19 sports.

* Egypt won 5 Olympic medals in Athens 4 years ago and will be looking to outperform that number this month in Beijing.
