Australian Open: Day 2 Summary and Video Highlights

Day 2 Summary

Seeds who marched on

Top seed Rafael Nadal crushed Christophe Rochus in the final match of the men's singles first round. 4th-seed, Andy Murray, barely had time to break some sweat on court when his opponent, Romanian veteran, Andrei Pavel, had to withdraw early in the second set due to injury, and later announced his retirement from the sport.

13th-seed, Fernando Gonzalez, outlasted home favorite, Lleyton Hewitt in a 5-set battle, while 9th-seed James Blake eased past Canada's Frank Dancevic.

The French seeds, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (5), Gilles Simon (6), Gael Monfils (12) and Richard Gasquet (24) all secured passage to the second round, with Tsonga easing his fans' concerns about his back problems, that seem to have subsided, at least for now.

14th-seed, Fernando Verdasco, thrashed his French opponent, Adrian Mannarino, while 17th-seed, Nicolas Almagro and 18th-seed, Igor Andreev, both needed 5 sets to get past their opponents. 22nd-seed, Radek Stepanek and 25th-seed, Ivo Karlovic also made it to the second round, as well as 31st-seed, Jurgen Melzer, who eliminated the dangerous up-and-comer, Kei Nishikori.

Fallen Seeds

29th-seed, Dmitry Tursunov, continued his disappointing streak, as he fell to Flavio Cipolla in 4 sets, while 30th-seed Rainer Schuettler, last year's surprise Wimbledon quarterfinalist, lost to Dudi Sela.

The Unseeded Hustlers

Mario Ancic, Ernests Gulbis, Guillermo Canas, Ivan Ljubicic and Tommy Haas are all still alive as they all booked their 2nd round spots on Tuesday.

Quote of the Day

"We're in some situations that are less than ideal in our country. I think if there's any man for the job that's ahead of him that can deal with the tasks and the pressures of being President in this tumultuous time, it's Barack Obama..." "I was proud to donate and help with the campaign. I'm proud to ‑‑ I'm always proud to say I'm an American, but I'm going to be especially proud at 4 a.m. here. It's going to be a very significant inauguration..."
