Australian Open: Day 3 Mid-day Update - Safin Through to Round 3

Melbourne's former champion, and this year's 26th-seed, Marat Safin, earned himself a spot in the third round of the Australian Open after posting a comfortable 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Wednesday. The Russian, who is playing his last Australian Open after announcing that this will be his final season on tour, may face Roger Federer in the third round, if the second-seeded Swiss wins his second round match today against Evgeny Korolev.

Safin's sister, Dinara Safina, seeded third, overcame a first-set hiccup against Ekaterina Makarova to come back and win the match 6-7, 6-3, 6-0.

19th-seed, Marin Cilic, edged past Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, to book a third round meeting with 11th-seed David Ferrer, who crushed Dominik Hrbaty, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1.

5th-seeded Ana Ivanovic claimed a convincing 6-3, 6-2, victory over Italy's Alberta Brianti, while her Serbian compatriot and defending champion, Novak Djokovic, looks like he's making quick work of Frenchman, Jeremy Chardy. The third-seed is up 7-5, 6-1, 4-0. Am sure he'll wrap this one up pretty soon. OR NOT!!! Chardy just broke Djokovic to love and pulled back one of those service breaks. That match ain't over yet!
